Following an open source approach that avoids vendor lock-in scenarios, the FIWARE Community is driving the development of smart digital solutions in a faster, easier and interoperable manner.
For the very first time, FIWARE is joining forces with French-born EGM to be present at the Salon Des Maires 2021. Held from 16-18 November at the Porte de Versailles, Paris, it is a must-attend event for the public sector, bringing together all the major players in public procurement to debate, share experiences and learn more about the key steps needed for the digital transformation of French cities.
During the event, all eyes and ears will be on Paris, a city that enjoys a reputation for exemplary residential urban design, especially after the city has committed itself to becoming a 15-Minute City. In simpler terms, it means anyone can reach their daily necessities within a 15-minute radius by foot or bike.
Brought to mainstream media’s attention by Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo – and inspired by French-Colombian scientist Carlos Moreno – the concept strives to reduce car usage in the city, resulting in fewer CO2 emissions and far cleaner air.
Meeting UN Sustainable Development Goal 11
But can cities and human settlements really be as healthy, sustainable, safe, resilient and inclusive as envisioned by the UN Sustainable Development Goal 11? Will cities be able to provide adequate housing, infrastructure and services to meet the needs of a growing population, or will environmental issues still determine their economic, political and social life?
Such questions that are pertinent to sustainable urban planning will be addressed by both private and public companies, as well as cities showcasing solutions at the upcoming Salon Des Maires. These are the very same questions that FIWARE’s international members, iHubs and partners Atos, AWS, Centifo hub, EGM, Eridanis, Faubourg Numérique, OASC and Orange have been working to solve, with their innovative solutions being presented at the FIWARE and EGM stand (D82 – Hall 4) at the fair.
After all, the FIWARE Community has been helping cities to get their smart city projects off the ground for quite some time now. As cities have to do more with less, using technology to their advantage in the wake of growing populations, global pandemics, natural and financial resource constraints, and overburdened infrastructure systems, cities are the place where sustainable and cost-effective remedies are forged.
From guiding cities to fully grasp the potential of open source tech and open common standards to helping private sector companies and citizens prepare for the coming wave of change, FIWARE is an active player when it comes to smart cities and smart territories. Additionally, given FIWARE’s involvement with GAIA-X as a day-1 member and use cases provider, it’s only natural that FIWARE joins this event.
‘More than ever before, sensors across the urban environment are adding a layer of intelligence to physical and social infrastructure systems,’ says Ulrich Ahle, CEO of FIWARE Foundation. ‘Real-time data and enhanced tech capabilities give cities the ability to respond more effectively to what is happening at any given moment.’
‘Yet, cities need better data, the right skills and manpower, and great freedom to implement smart technologies. This is where the FIWARE Community has been making a difference. Hundreds of cities worldwide – including several in France – have already adopted FIWARE tech and open common standards to become more efficient and resilient to environmental challenges, providing citizens with a better place to work, live and socialise. We very much look forward to telling you all about that during the Salon Des Maires 2021.’
Smart digital solutions at the forefront of innovation
At the FIWARE and EGM stand, the FIWARE Community will be joined by some of FIWARE’s international members, iHubs and partners Atos, AWS, Centifo hub, EGM, Eridanis, Faubourg Numérique, OASC and Orange, which are creating smart city solutions that are intelligent, safer and sustainable. Most importantly, their solutions take into account specific demands and individual requirements. Join us on a journey of digital transformation, with practical examples focused on sustainability, data economy and the efficient management of public services – from the citizens’ standpoint.
Through presentations and live demos, we will discuss relevant topics such as city platform models, data-driven innovation, openness, interoperability and multi-sided markets. Real-life use cases from several French members and cities will showcase how the FIWARE Community are using open source and open standards, implementing smart city concepts faster and more efficiently with less disruption to city operations.
On Nov. 16 (14:30-15:00 CET) Frédérique Macarez, Mayor and President of the Urban Community of Saint-Quentin (France) will be in the stand with the FIWARE Community to enlighten visitors on what she has been planning for the city, present how Saint-Quentin uses ‘Powered by FIWARE’ solutions – provided by the local SME Hostabee – to optimise sport fields watering and manage foodwaste in canteens.
A medium-sized city located in the Hauts-de-France region, Saint-Quentin has taken a fresh approach to improving its public services by combining IoT technologies, data platform, open data and expertise from local ecosystems including SMEs and universities. During the visit, Alexandre Chaffotte (Innovation and Smart City Manager at Saint-Quentin), Franck Le Gall (CEO and CTO at EGM), and Vincent Demortier (FIWARE Expert and President at Faubourg Numérique) will walk visitors through their involvement within the project and the overall benefits that FIWARE brings to smart cities. Stop by stand D82 – Hall 4 on Nov. 16 – 14:30-15:00 pm and hear all about it.

As part of FIWARE’s adoption strategy in France, and in light of Salon Des Maires, FIWARE is organising a French Hop-on Session on 9 November, which is open to all stakeholders who want to learn about standard-driven and open source strategies. It will be very hands-on with lots of use cases and insights into real city implementations, with diverse market players demonstrating why using the European smart cities de-facto standard with FIWARE is key to creating successful and sustainable solutions for cities. Registration is still open.
Visit stand D82 at Salon Des Maires on 16-18 November at Porte de Versailles, Paris, and see for yourself how FIWARE members, iHubs and partners are guiding cities and helping them to embrace the Smart City concept.
