In the field of computer science and information technology, the term artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the ability to endow machines with an intelligence/problem-solving capability or analytical reasoning independent of direct control from an external operator, similar to the usual notion of intellect demonstrated by humans and other living beings. The dream of AI dates back many years – intelligent robots appear in the myths of many ancient civilisations, including Greek, Arabic, Egyptian and Chinese. Nowadays, the field of artificial intelligence is more vibrant than ever, and some believe we’re on the threshold of discoveries that could change human society irreversibly, for better or worse!
Alexa, Siri and Cortana are obvious examples of the “march of AI” into our everyday lives, but AI is being added to technology all around us. It can be found in television, mobile phones, vacuum cleaners, navigation systems, GPS system, lawnmowers, videogames, chapatti makers and cars, as well as services such as Netflix, Amazon, Pandora and Nest. AI can also be found in Hollywood special effects movies (such as Tau or Extinction), e-commerce applications, healthcare research and international stockbroking and trading. And although it relies heavily on deep learning and natural language processing, these are evolving rapidly, and there is no stopping the evolution and inevitable rise of AI technology.
The future of AI
In early 2018, two AI systems – one created by the Chinese giant Alibaba and the other by Microsoft – beat a team of human competitors in a Stanford reading comprehension test. The algorithms “read” a series of Wikipedia entries on subjects ranging from the rise of Genghis Khan to the Apollo space programme, then answered a series of questions about them more accurately than people did.
The AI in question was a narrow (or weak) AI, in that it was designed to achieve a specific “narrow” task (such as facial recognition, internet searches, predictive shopping or driving an autonomous car). However, the long-term goal of many researchers is to create general AI (AGI or strong AI). While a narrow AI may outperform humans at its specific task, whether playing chess or solving equations, AGI would outperform humans at nearly every cognitive task. It’s quite debatable whether AI will take over all human jobs or not, but artificial intelligence will never achieve artificial emotional intelligence, no matter how solid the algorithm is!
